INFO

At first glance Junichirou Tanizaki isn't someone who'd stand out in a crowd. His appearance isn't anything special to look at nor are the clothes he wears. He's casual both in his choice of fashion and disposition, being that of an individual who's laid back and easygoing. Really, there isn't anything strange about Tanizaki that one would be able to pick out, that is until they get to know him.

Of course, getting to know Tanizaki means getting to know the current version of him. His past is entirely a mystery and aside from the tidbit of information we're given alluding to how he and his younger sister used to be students, we've no idea about what kind of life Tanizaki lead before joining the Armed Detective Agency. His parents don't seem to be in the picture and he's fiercely protective of Naomi, not only playing the role of her provider and caretaker, but also her older brother and, as it's heavily implied, her lover.

See, that last bit makes him stand out as an uncomfortable oddity within the ADA. Naomi makes it all too clear in her teasing of Tanizaki and blatant displays of affection that there's more going on between the two of them. She's always ready to embarrass him in front of his co-workers, which is something Tanizaki himself never seems to enjoy. Sure he never pushes her away and lets her cling to him, but her blatant advances aren't something he reciprocates or ever initiates. While those he works with definitely don't seem to approve of whatever relationship they've got going on, they seem to deal with it by just ignoring their antics. Whether they're actually related or not is another point of debate, one Tanizaki never seems to confirm despite Naomi being adamant about it to Atsushi when he asks. Regardless of blood relations, Naomi to Tanizaki is his entire world, full stop. To him a world without Naomi in it doesn't deserve to exist, which is made readily apparent in the way he's ready to slaughter everyone in his path that dares threaten his sister or actually manages to harm her.

Despite his devotion to his younger sister and their weird relationship, Tanizaki is quite friendly to everyone he meets and seems to form connections with others easily. That said, he doesn't like being put in the spotlight or imposing himself onto others. When he has to play up the part of a bomber as part of Atsushi's so called "entrance exam" into the ADA, Tanizaki apologies over and over again to the other boy about what he'd said and how rude he'd been to him. Even though the whole thing had been an act on Tanizaki's part and a role he'd had to play per the Director's orders, he still didn't like doing so. Compared to the rest of his co-workers, Tanizaki's one of the more "normal" ones and doesn't seem to have any social quirks or eccentricities. Mostly he does desk work, unless he's sent out on a recon mission to collect intel or scout out an area. As a member of the Armed Detective Agency Tanizaki is an Ability user and a deadly one at that. While he himself downplays the potency of his ability, telling Atsushi that he's not really one for fighting or very good at it, it's proven time and time again that Tanizaki is incredibly skilled at using his ability for assassination. His ability Light Snow grants him the power to cast illusions, which he uses to his advantage during missions to get the upper hand. He's so good at what he does that he nearly manages to assassinate the Mafia's Boss, Mori Ougai. For someone who doesn't think they're very good at fighting, Tanizaki doesn't hesitate when it comes to killing if it's necessary or required of him. In this regard his sense of morality is skewed and he's capable of compartmentalizing his feelings to succeed.

Just because Tanizaki can be quite ruthless doesn't mean he enjoys being that way - he doesn't. He's also incredibly selfless, to the point of being self-sacrificing at times. He's very group orientated, doing things to further the interests of the ADA which is like a broader family to him. Of course though Naomi comes first above all else, as he's keen on ensuring his younger sister is always happy and pleased. No matter what he's forced to endure, Tanizaki's willing to take it on the chin so to speak. He even offers himself up to take Yosano's place when she's about to be handed over to the mafia without a second thought, despite knowing what would be waiting for him if he did end up in their hands.

All in all, Tanizaki is an eighteen year old boy who'd love to pass himself off as normal, even if underneath the illusion and facade he puts on he's not. Unless the opportunity or necessity to show others just how "gifted" he is comes about, he's not one to make a blatant, over the top show of his ability if there's no need to. He'd much rather be the one behind the curtain rather than the freak show on display. That said, he does enjoy the wonder on other people's faces when he does use his ability and they're impressed, if not charmed by what he can do.

Powers/Abilities:

Tanizaki is an Ability user in his canon, meaning he's an individual "gifted" with a supernatural power. His ability - Light Snow - allows him to cast an illusion within a specific radius and essentially create a holographic screen out of tiny "snowflakes" if you will, hence the name. These particles come together to create said screen, making whatever illusion he projects to those around him seamless and undetectable. It also sort of looks like the matrix when it's being broken.

There are multiple applications he's used his ability for, from cloaking individuals and physical objects to hide them from view, (for example, he cloaks a helicopter he pilots to keep it hidden from radar/physical sight) to creating illusions that appear to possess physical attributes and be solid enough to affect their surroundings (he creates a holographic version of Atsushi's White Tiger that appears to be as vicious and dangerous as the real thing).

The most common use of his ability is during undercover missions, where he cloaks his presence to carry out assassinations. Tanizaki may not be very adept in hand to hand combat or head on attacks, but when it comes to stealth and taking out an enemy without them seeing what's coming he's well adept.

Aside from his ability Tanizaki seems to be quite good at using a multitude of weapons (guns, knives etc.) and operating vehicles (such as cars and even piloting a helicopter). Such is life when you work for the Armed Detective Agency. He also seems to have some decent housewife skills when it comes to cooking and cleaning.

Power Nerfs (if applicable):

While there are no specific limits stated in canon when it comes to Tanizaki's capabilities, his ability isn't able to affect a radius say the size of a city, for example. The affect is far more localized, contained to the dimensions of the object/person he's cloaking or the room/building/area he's currently in. Excessive or orolonged use of his ability and the more intricate and complex the illusions are will eventually take a toll on him, either physically making him feel tired later on or leaving him with a headache until he's rested.

Inventory: All Tanizaki'll have on him will be his clothes and a switchblade he can shank people with.

Incentives: The guaranteed safety of Naomi is all Tanizaki needs to be cooperative. He's a laid-back kind of guy to begin with, so as long as he knows that his sister will be okay...he'll put up with whatever bullshit he has to.
